So...

I think it's time we laid to rest the question, "what kind of music do you like?" Maybe it used to be so cut and dried that you could classify your music preferences as alternative or punk or rap, but nowadays any self-respecting musician has more complexity than that. Like in High Fidelity when Dick describes Marie de Salle as "kind of Sheryl Crow-ish crossed with a post-Partridge family, pre-L.A. Law Susan Day kind of thing, but you know, um, black."

Is there really any good way to answer that question? Some people use an exclusion tactic, as in, "I like everything but country music," but even that approach is flawed. How can someone dislike ALL country music? There's a continental divide between a singer like Johnny Cash and a band like the Dixie Chicks. Every band, every musician has their own influences, and to categorize them is not only deceiving, it's inaccurate.

Besides, what can you learn about me by my answer to that question anyway? I may be influenced by the music I listen to, but I am the collection of all my musical influences, who are a collection of all their musical influences. So let's not worry our pretty little heads over what kind of music I like or what kind of music you like, because there are better ways to become acquainted.

So... what's your favorite movie?

wow, i'm glad you said that. its so true. its such an easy thing to ask but so pointless. i can't even explain why i like most of the music i do, and its rare when a shared musical taste results in a meaningful conversation.

oh yeah, i just linked to you at jetstream....

nicely written,
