What's the next best thing since sliced bread? Having a bread store right across the street from you. And every time I go there to buy my loaf of farmhouse wholemeal bread cut with thick slices, I also buy a jam donut because I deserve them and they bring me pleasure. They're the next best thing since the last best thing, but of course in this case you need the previous best things in order to access the next best thing.
