What's bothersome about having those little black ants in your house, besides their very presence in the house in the first place, is that there's no way to punish them for their behavior. Oh, you can kill them one-by-one, you can even get ant traps or other seemingly clever devices to rid yourself of their inhabitance, but they will always return. Such solutions do not get to the real root of the problem, they don't teach anyone a lesson.
It would best if you could kill one and then give the corpse to the other ants and say, "Take this back to the anthole with you and show your friends what happens when you hang around on my kitchen counter."

in fact, if you leave a dead ant there it will usually get carried back to the nest as ants are cannibalous! it's even used as a test to see if you've gotten rid of ants once and for all after serious pest control measures.
So rather than being suitably disciplined they're just excited because I'm providing them a food source? Drat!
i just wrote this as a comment through livejournal not realising it was only a feed. oops. now i see that my thoughts have already been expressed by others anyway. oh well here it is "well more likely you would kill one and then they would take it back to their friends and say "yay food" and eat the carcas.
the best thing you can do is try your best not to leave food anywhere they can get to it. no reason for them to come into your house then rather than the bug-rich outside world.
perhaps you could try some of these http://www.vegsource.com/talk/gardening/messages/6018.html
good luck,
