It took me much longer become acquainted with Tom Waits than I care to admit. His whiskey voiced melodies came crawling into my consciousness in college, induced by a friend who has an uncanny personality resemblence to the man himself, and we have been musical bedfellows ever since. He sings just for me you know. The first track on this particular album usually has me captivated by its false sense of security. I listen to it over and over. Sample clips are never as good as the whole experience, but for the sake of abiding by copyright laws, I'll refrain from posting the entire song.
And so a secret kiss
Brings madness with the bliss
And I will think of this
When I'm dead in my grave
Set me adrift and I'm lost over there
And I must be insane
To go skating on your name
And by tracing it twice
I fell through the ice
Of Alice

that's a damn good song. i think it's my favorite on that album along with "watch her disappear." do you have his newer album real gone? it's sooo good.
some of my favorite tom waits lines:
from "make it rain" (on real gone)
Without her love
Without your kiss
Hell can't burn me
More than this
I'm burning up all this pain
Put out the fire
Make it rain!
and from "dead and lovely" (on real gone)
I've always been told to
Remember this
Don't let a fool kiss you
Never marry for love
and from "hold on" (on mule variations)
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
