Some women have difficulty with directions. These are more likely to give landmarks when telling you how to get where you're going, rather than street names and numbers. Unfortunately I live in the land of the latter, and these directions were far outside my field of understanding. Amazingingly enough, I made it to the right place...eventually.
Get off the interstate at the exit after the West Linn exit
Turn left at the Subaru dealer
Go straight through two stoplights
Turn left at the produce stand
Turn right and go up the hill
First building on your right

Wow, those are some pretty crappy directions. Nice job with finding the place.
I think I tend to give a mixture of the two, something like "Go west on Burnside until you see the Elephant, which is at 9th I think, and turn right ..."
I relate intersections and such in my head with what they *look* like, so a mixture of street names and landmarks is handy.
I tend to use both landmarks and street names. I underestimate my ability to drive in the unknown, but I always make it to where I need to be.
